Lingle's support for Akaka bill: politics for Senate run?

The Hawaii Reporter has an interesting piece that claims that Republicans on Capitol Hill see Lingle's support for the Akaka bill as purely political:
...Lingle and White House administrators are telling Republican Congress members that Lingle wants to be elected to the U.S. Senate, and passing the Akaka bill would cinch the deal with Hawaii voters. Republicans in Congress are being told if they want one of Hawaii’s U.S. Senators to be a Republican after either U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye or U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka leave office, they’d better vote for the passage of the Akaka Bill.

This is certainly no surprise to me. I figured that her support for the bill is mostly calculated to win Native Hawaiian votes, whether to try to secure her reelection as governor, or for a run at the Senate.

Of course this runs counter to the spin being put out by the conservative opponents to the bill, based on their biased and misinterpreted poll, that there is overwhelming opposition to the bill, and that supporters will pay a political price for it. Obviously Lingle feels there is a net benefit politically to supporting the bill, and this is just confirmed by the reports about her motivations. Those who oppose the bill on the right probably won't have a palatable and viable alternative to Lingle for whatever seat she runs for next, so it is probably calculated to win her votes among Native Hawaiians without really risking too much on her right flank.

For me, I don't support the bill (mostly for different reasons than its critics on the right), I would prefer someone like Big Island mayor Harry Kim to defeat Lingle as governor, and I would prefer a Democratic senate, so this is one more reason to hope it doesn't pass.
