Akaka bill faces serious roadblock

Breaking story from the Advertiser:
A Native Hawaiian federal recognition bill hit a serious roadblock in the U.S. Senate today, after Hawai'i senators learned that as many as six Republican senators are blocking the bill from coming to the floor for a vote.
The opposition means the bill likely will not reach a vote this week, and raises doubt about whether the bill would be heard before the Senate breaks for an August recess, as Republican leaders had promised.

U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawai'i, and U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawai'i, continue to talk with Republicans, but may consider asking Democratic leaders to try to force a vote on the bill next week.

Democratic leaders would have to file a cloture motion, which would open up 30 hours of debate on the bill. Sixty votes are required to end cloture and free the bill to the floor.

Inouye said it would be an extraordinary step to take, but he believes he has enough votes.

It appears the conservative lobbying has had its effect in blocking the bill. If the Dems resort to these tactics to try to force the bill to a vote, it will certainly raise the exposure of this whole issue. Most people in the U.S. still have not even heard of this bill or the larger issues and are totally unaware of the storm brewing. It will be most interesting if all of a sudden the Senate is in a (reverse) cloture battle, with 30 hours of debate, over a bill that most people have never heard of for an obscure issue that doesn't directly affect them. I think this type of confrontation would get noticed in the media even among the SCOTUS and Rove leak din. Whatever one feels about the bill, it can be argued that the exposure itself may be constructive. Even with all the misinformation that will surely flow from both sides, a lot more people will be at least aware that it is an issue than ever before. And there will be an opportunity for independence voices to get the real story out.
