Restoration Day Celebration

Sunday's Advertiser had this story about the La Ho'iho'i Ea (Restoration Day) celebration at Thomas Square on July 31, a Hawaiian Kingdom holiday that has been revived, with a flag raising ceremony. Here's a picture from Kealii Makekau showing the Hawaiian Kingdom flag upside down as a symbol of a nation in distress.

One thing I would like to point out is that in the first sentence of the article where it says "Hawaiian nationals, or Kanaka Maoli," that is incorrect – Hawaiian national is NOT synonymous with Kanaka Maoli. One is a political definition, one is an ethnic definition. Hawaiian nationals are not exclusively Kanaka Maoli. While I give the organizers of this event a lot of credit for keeping it going and making an important ceremony every year, I believe they do a disservice to their purpose by focusing on Kanaka Maoli rather than Hawaiian nationals, and confusing the two. While being Kanaka Maoli is very important in its own way, Ka La Ho'iho'i Ea is a national holiday, and the political strength that Kanaka Maoli have internationally is because of their political status as Hawaiian nationals, not their ethnic identity as Kanaka Maoli.
