Living in a nation currently occupied by the United States
In a letter
to the
Maui
News, Chadwick Nakagawa of Waiehu says that he
respects all of his ancestors, and that he is not an American, but "a Hawaiian
subject living in a nation currently occupied by the United States military,
called the state of Hawaii." In
response to a previous letter writer, he
asks:And what is this richness of life that will pass me by if I continue to “whine” about past injustices? Is it the destruction of land for “Iraq training?” Is it the millions of tourists that deplete our groundwater supply faster than the rain can replenish it? Is it the huge issue of overfishing in Hawaiian waters? Is it the million-dollar mansions that block access to our beaches?
