Kingdom was better at keeping up roads
In the light of numerous potholes in Honolulu's
roads in the wake of recent heavy rains, Derek Kauanoe writes a letter
in the
Star-Bulletin
about how roads were maintained under the Hawaiian Kingdom, pointing out that it
was "quite efficient and community based." I like how, in this and other
letters, Derek takes a topic of current interest to the public and shares a
perspective on it from the kingdom era, in a factual and non-political way, to
get people thinking about the history, and show that the kingdom had laws for
dealing with various aspects of life in advantageous ways, with the implication
that it could do so again. There's
also a letter on the "Kahuna" concept car, and another letter
on that topic in the
Advertiser.
