Akahi's land claim rejected by state LUC
The Maui
News has a
story
about Akahi Nui's petition to intervene in an
application for approval of the 410-home affordable housing project in Waikapu
now pending before the state Land Use Commission. The petition contended that
the entire island of Maui rightfully belongs to the "Kingdom of Hawaii Nation,"
and so Spencer cannot obtain clear title to the land. "Commissioners said based
on the evidence before them Friday, they had to reject the Kingdom of Hawaii
Nation’s petition. [...] without actually ruling on the validity of the
Kingdom of Hawaii Nation’s claim to the land." While I agree that there
are valid questions about land title in Hawaii, claiming title to the whole
island, as the supposed king, makes no sense to me, since even under Kingdom of
Hawaii law there is a distinction between government and private
land.
