LA Times on Kanahele & Puuhonua O Waimanalo village
The Los
Angeles
Times has a good
article
today entitled "Rebuilding a Hawaiian Kingdom"
that profiles Bumpy Kanahele and the Puuhonua O Waimanalo village. The reporter
has a respectful tone and is mostly factually accurate. One thing it doesn't
mention is that Kanahele's emphasis for over ten years has been racial
inclusion, and that while protecting Hawaiian culture and rights is important,
independence is an issue of nationality, not based on race, and not just a
native/indigenous issue. This is a
great example of how the action around the Akaka bill can create opportunities
for independence voices to tell their story.
UPDATE:
FYI, this is the
Times'
top "Column One" story in their Nation
section, so I assume it has pretty prominent placement in the print edition, and
it is also currently their #1 most emailed story today.
The story has also been picked
up in
the Chicago
Tribune
Travel section.
