Rhetorical Reviews

Hi Tech Rhet blog, for members of classes in rhetoric and electronic media at UH-Manoa, has a couple relevant posts recently.

Koa reviews the Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics (HSLP) site, and says:
I highly recommend the HSLP website to anyone who is interested in International Law (any Jurists or Theorists?) and Hawaiian issues (political, cultural and historical). If Hawaiian history didn't make sense in high school or college this site can help. It provides original source documentation and proper theory to give you a better context of Hawaii.

Meanwhile, Jonelle reviews Twiggy's Hawaii Matters site, saying:
Mr. Twigg-Smith supports his grandfather's actions completely, and is behind several organizations intent on maintaining the illegal and unconstitutional status quo here.

This site siezes upon the lack of general education on the history of Hawaii, and targets those seeking information about the issue of sovereignty with an appeal to logos. But it's really an example of the empty language rhetoric we see so often today. The site claims to promote dialogue and a better understanding, and to offer a "wide range of views" on sovereignty, but instead links only to sites which agree with Twigg-Smith's position, and which fail to address any of the issues brought forth by his opponents.

The appeal to ethos is made based on the American commonplaces about racial equality and civil liberties. Essentially arguing that restoring land or rights to Native Hawaiians is unconstitutional. Of course the site fails to note that Hawaii's statehood is unconstitutional. If Hawaii is not legally a part of the U.S., is it subject to the U.S. Constitution? Or the Supreme Court? Or to any of laws which the site invokes?
