It's not secession, but...

Jeff Adams at the Old Right Pundits blog supports the Akaka bill and Hawaii's right to secede:
The fear associated with the possible secession of part or all of Hawaii is not that a small portion of a small state in the union might break away. The real fear is that it legitimizes the act of secession and that others might follow Hawaii's lead, thus leading to the breakup of the American union. Whoever said the union was meant to last forever? Fear of the breakup of the union is something that should only be found in the hearts of those who clamor for empire, not those that cherish freedom.

And here's an excerpt from his concluding paragraph:
If Hawaii eventually attempts to leave the union, they should be allowed to do so. It is their right to do so, just as it was the right of the colonists in 1776 to separate from the British Empire and form their own association/union, and the South in 1861 to do like wise. To deny Hawaii, or any state, the right of self-determination and force them to remain in the union is like insisting that a battered wife should remain in her marital union, even if her husband continues to beat her, simply because 'that's the way it's always been.'

Of course, the Akaka bill as internal U.S. legislation actually has nothing to do with independence, and the separate issue of ending the prolonged occupation of the continuous (PDF) Hawaiian state is not secession. A more appropriate analogy would be a shotgun wedding performed by someone only pretending to be a justice of the peace—the marriage is not valid to begin with, so no divorce is needed. But it is still interesting to see someone from the right making this argument, from within his own perspective.

Speaking of secession, though, it was amusing to see The Daily Show cover Christian Exodus last night as part of their Evolution Schmevolution week. Christian Exodus is a group that wants Christians to move to South Carolina and eventually "dissolve our State's bond with the union" if necessary. They were also recently profiled in the LA Times with the leader quoted as saying "If necessary we will secede from the union." Earlier, I pointed out the double WorldNet Daily's coverage of Hawaiian issues and Christian secession.
