Debt obligation

Though not directly related to Hawaiian issues, I was reminded by Corky's cartoon today of an aspect not discussed much, but worth pondering... As the U.S. spirals into deeper and deeper national debt, meaning in simplistic terms that future taxpayers will have to pay taxes and receive no government services in return as debt and interest are paid, what does this mean in terms of the economic implications of Hawaii's independence? We hear arguments from the other side about how dependent we are on U.S. funds, how more comes into Hawaii than goes out in taxes. But we are also collectively obligated for this debt, which according to the U.S. National Debt Clock is now just short of $8 trillion, which comes out to over $26,600 per individual. As an occupied country, with the U.S. political and economic system imposed without legitimate authority, is Hawaii (and particularly are Hawaiian nationals) really obligated to this debt? I don't know the answer to exactly what the implications of this are, but it is worth thinking about in the overall analysis of the economic effect of ending the occupation. Possible that the greater the debt becomes, the more advantageous independence will seem, and the more appealing Hawaiian nationality.
