Akahi arrested
I missed this when the
Maui
News reported it
Tuesday, but James 'Kimo' Akahi, aka Majesty Akahi Nui, was arrested last
weekend for allegedly trespassing on 'state' land near Kahului Airport. "Police
said some no-trespassing signs had been removed and 'Kingdom of Hawaii' signs
put up on the land." Akahi claims to be king and held a coronation ceremony at
the Palace in 1998. I support anyone who stands up for Hawaii's independence and
the rights and lands of Hawaiian nationals, but I also don't know too many
people who take his claim to the throne seriously. There is a specific
constitutional provision (article 22) for the legislature to elect a monarch in
the case of an interregnum and lack of clear line of succession, so until that
happens I don't believe anyone can make a legitimate claim to the throne,
including Akahi. You can see his website at FreeHawaii.org (no relation to
the FreeHawaii.info
blog).
