Bumpy on Native Hawaiian Bank

Via email from Lynette Cruz:
Aloha all,

Tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 6) Bumpy will be taping in-studio at Palolo (Jarrett Middle School) at 6 pm on the Native Hawaiian bank. He gave this very interesting presentation for my students this pastThursday evening. They loved it! In their view, the bank idea makes great sense, as it gives Hawaiians and supporters a way to participate and to unify (as participants) around an idea that is non-divisive and could/would build solidarity and contribute to an economic strategy for the Hawaiian nation.

This taping will have an audience. If any of you would like to come down and be part of a round table discussion with Bumpy on this idea, please join us in-studio at 5:45 pm. Seating is limited. Taping begins at 6 pm, but everyone needs to be seated first. Bumpy will encourage questions and comments from the audience.

Call or email if you have questions or concerns. Hope to see you tomorrow.

And just for a sense of context, both that it is quite possible to start a new bank, and to have a bank that focuses on a particular portion of Hawaii's ethnic community, here's an Advertiser article from last month about the new Ohana Pacific Bank that will "cater to the growing Korean-American community."
While the bank will be open to all customers, Hyun said, it will target the Korean community, which it believes has been underserved by Hawai'i's banking industry.

In its filings, Ohana Pacific said that there are about 36,000 people of Korean ancestry in Hawai'i with a potential deposit base of about $659 million. The company projected that it could attract about 14 percent of that market, or about $91 million, by its third year of operation.

If Koreans in Hawaii can have a bank focused on their own needs, why can't Hawaiians, who are probably even more underserved, and with Hawaiian institutions like Kamehameha Schools have a much greater potential deposit base? This would provide a lot of economic benefits to the Hawaiian community that would complement KS and other institutions' missions. It is a very practical but powerful solution that can be done under the existing system, that I encourage everyone to study and support. Check out Bumpy's website for more details on the proposal, and attend his presentation tomorrow if you can.
