Ku'e anti-annexation petition memorial wall proposed
Kunani Nihipali and Ho'oipo Kalaena'auao Pa had a
commentary
in the

last Sunday outlining a proposal to create a memorial to display the 1897
anti-annexation petition. I think it is a great idea (I also happen to
be helping create the mini-website for the project). When these petitions came
out in 1998, they were displayed
publicly on large boards at the "state" capitol, and I think it had a
profound effect as folks were able to see all those who stood up against
annexation and find their names of their own kupuna on the petition, creating a
very direct and personal connection for independence. A permanent version of
this display is worthy of support. Ke Kia'i was awarded an OHA grant for the
initial phase of the project which will include community meetings to gather
ideas for the memorial.
