The project was initially conceived as an experiment to see if the thoughts of everyday Americans matched up with the mainstream media's portrayal of this nation's values.

Imagine my surprise when the subject for the Hawaii segment of this cross-country exploration, David Keanu Sai, 41, announced that Hawaii is not a state, but rather a sovereign nation occupied by the United States.

"Hawaii," he said, "is occupied, like Iraq."
