Palace open this evening for celebration of Queen Kapi'olani's
birthday
From the 'Iolani Palace
website:In celebration of
Queen Kapi`olani's birthday, we invite you to experience special docent-led
evening tours of the State Apartments, followed by self-guided tours of the
Basement Galleries. The life and good works of this beloved queen, whose
birthday is December 31, will be highlighted. This is a rare opportunity to
enjoy the soft evening glow of period lighting as it surrounded guests to the
Palace one hundred years ago.The Palace
and grounds will be decorated as they were during the Monarchy era. Colorful
lanterns, hung on the building and the surrounding carriageways, will form a
festive backdrop to the evening entertainments. Musicians near the front steps
will greet and serenade guests, while other musicians in the Palace rooms will
present musical selections from the nineteenth
century.Visitors will be able to wander
through the Basement Galleries to view some of the treasures of the Hawaiian
Kingdom. These include the magnificent feather cloak of Kiwala`o, a procession
of kahili, a large temple drum, and the jewel-encrusted crowns once worn by King
Kalakaua and Queen Kapi`olani.Palace
