Within” by Tom CoffmanPanel
Dialogue &
presentationThe
film, *“Nation Within”* shows how American planters engineered the
annexation of Hawaii and how mainland public opinion was manipulated into
accepting the takeover. It also places the annexation in context of the
imperialism and colonialism that was sweeping the world in the late 19th
century. Finally, it shows the resistance of the Hawaiian people to being
submerged in the American nation and gives us an idea of the sovereignty
movement in Hawai’i today.On
January 17, 1993, the United Churches of Christ issued a formal Apology in
Hawaii to Na Kanaka Maoli, which began a process of redress and reconciliation.
Earlier that year Congress passed an Apology to Native Hawaiians Resolution U.S.
Resolution 103-50.The Martin Luther
King, Jr. Holiday event “Life Every Voice” will be an opportunity to
lift the voices of those involved in the apology and reconciliation work, what
this has meant in the past thirteen years, and what is the vision for the
future, that justice will
prevail.“The moral arc of the
universe bends at the elbow of
justice.”— Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
