Mahalo to Bruce & Jackie Mahi
Erickson '58, who so generously donated this painting to Ke Ali'i Pauahi
Foundation so that this rare treasure can be enjoyed by Ka Oiwi Hawaii - our
Native Hawaiian People, and all who love
Hawaii.
This important painting not only captures this
unique period in Hawaiian history, it is significant because of the Renaissance
man who created it, Joseph Hooluhi
Nawahiokalaniopuu.
A teacher, journalist, attorney, legislator
and cabinet member to Queen Liliuokalani, Nawahi was a self-taught painter and
only five of his paintings are known to exist. The painting will have a
permanent home at Ka'iwakiloumoku, the Hawaii Cultural Center at Kapalama in
2009.
