ColloquiumA Slippery Path to Hawaiian
Indigeneity: An analysis pertaining to the terminology Indigenous Hawaiian and
its use and practice in Hawai`i
today.Please join Keanu Sai, Ph.D.
Candidate, as he shares the answer to one of his comprehensive exam questions,
regarding the use and historical analysis of the term Hawaiian
Indigeneity. He will explore the manner in which the Hawaiian
Indigenous movement gained momentum in the 1970's and 1980's by borrowing U.S.
colonial terminology to further their claims. As a historical read on this
terminology, Keanu will explore the juncture where Hawai`i as a Sovereign State
was overcome with the discourse of a Hawaiian Indigeneity. This will
be an insightful discussion as to how Hawaiians are both viewed and view
themselves through political and social
terminologies.Friedman Room 624,
