Statehood anniversary - "serious examination"
Following Shapiro's column on the topic
in the Advertiser
last week, the
Star-Bulletin
looks
at Senate Bill 1438,
which passed Thursday, calling for a celebration of being the 50th state in 2009
that would cost the state $250,000, and be organized by a 51-member committee
appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle with representatives from groups like students,
academia, native Hawaiians and the faith-based community. The article briefly
discusses the "historically loaded and sometimes heated topic of statehood" and
hopes that the anniversary will bring a "serious examination" of Hawaii's
history.A House bill dealing with the
anniversary is scheduled to be heard at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday by the Tourism and
Culture Committee in House Conference Room
