AIM Report: Independence For Hawaii?

This blog and the hawaii-nation.org website get mentioned (though not named or linked) in this Accuracy in Media AIM Report.

"Bush should pay attention closer to home," it says. "There is a growing movement to sever Hawaii from the United States, on the grounds that it was illegally invaded and occupied by the United States."

See? Even "Accuracy in Media" says it is a growing movement.

BTW, AIM claims to be a neutral "grassroots citizens watchdog of the news media" but always seems to attack perceived liberal bias in the media, it has ties with many conservative groups, and has received substantial funding from Richard Scaife. It quotes Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum website in the portion about Hawaii. You get the idea.

I must say, they are just quoting the website and regurgitating a regular right-wing fear-mongering about the Akaka bill leading to "secession" without providing their readers any real insight whatsoever into the actual complexities of the situation, including the fact that many independence supporters oppose the Akaka bill because they feel it will obstruct and divert from, not lead to, independence. But who cares? It isn't about accuracy in media, apparently, but it is about using fear of Hawaii's "secession" as a rhetorical cudgel to promote their right-wing agenda (which manifests here as attacks on Hawaiian institutions and programs, but that is part of a much larger pattern).

But it is ironic that those who are doing much to spread the meme of "Independence For Hawaii" are those who fear it and warn against it. By warning against it, they are drawing attention to it. By fearing it, they are giving it power. They are, for example, giving exposure to the idea that Hawaii is occupied, and of Hawaiian "sovereignty" as having support of both the past Dem and present Repub Hawaii governors. And even though they don't link, they are probably sending some traffic (aloha! the info is out there for you to make up your own mind if you really want to find it... start with the Hawaii Documents and Hawaii Links to the right).

The main point, though: they wouldn't be warning about it if they didn't believe it's real. They know it is, in fact, a growing movement.
