commemorates the events of
July 31, 1843, when Admiral Thomas ended an unauthorized 5-month British
occupation of Hawaii, and out of which came Kamehameha's III's expressions of
"Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka 'Aina I Ka Pono" which became Hawaii's motto and has remained
so to this day. (Note that it is often translated as "The life of the land is
perpetuated in righteousness," but Ea
means both life and sovereignty—as in La Ho‘i Ho‘i
Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day—and in the context it is clear that the
latter meaning was intended and should not be forgotten today.)
