Subdivision stopped; Lindsey jailed; 'Grass Shack' doctrine
A Big Island judge has halted
plans for a new subdivision south of Kailua, Kona, based on cultural
and environmental concerns, ordering county planning officials to gather more
information about the project before allowing it to advance. The plaintiff who
challenged the project, Wayne Leslie, said: "As a cultural practitioner who
depends on the natural resources of the ahupua'a of South Kona, it is my
inherent obligation to protect these resources for present and future
generations." Lokelani
Lindsey, former Bishop Estate/Kamehameha
Schools trustee convicted of bankruptcy fraud, began serving
her six month prison sentence today. Another story. In
the UH paper Ka Leo, columnist Lance Collins compares
the situation in Iraq today with the
'Grass Shack'
doctrine, under variations of which the U.S.
has occupied and controlled territories in the Pacific the Spanish-American War
of 1898 (the same year Hawaii was 'annexed' by mere joint
resolution).
