New scriptwriter for Kamehameha film now named 'Battle for
Paradise'
Variety
reports:
"Kleopatra" scribe Karen
Essex is rewriting Columbia Pictures' King Kamehameha project, "Battle for
Paradise," which is being produced by Neal Moritz's Original Film and Rob
Cohen.
Cohen is also directing, and
the Rock is attached to star.
Pic's
original scribe was Greg Poirier ("Runaway
Jury").
"Battle for Paradise" is a
biopic about Hawaii's ruler King Kamehameha, who conquered and united the
Hawaiian islands in the 1700s, during a time when they were plagued by warring
tribes.
Essex is the author of
"Kleopatra," a retelling of the story of the Egyptian monarch, published in 2001
by Warner Books. Essex adapted the book for the screen, and the project is being
developed into a film at Warner Bros., with Adam Schroeder producing. Essex also
adapted horror scribe Anne Rice's "The Mummy" for Lightstorm Entertainment, a
film in development at Fox.
