Ku'e Petition Memorial Wall proposed
The Native Hawaiian Advisory Council is proposing
a permanent memorial for the Ku'e
Petitions of 1897. Sounds to me like a project worth supporting. I
know when these petitions were first displayed publicly in 1998, they created
quite an impact. Just about every Hawaiian could find their ancestors' names on
the petition, so it made history very personal, and also made it quite clear
that what they stood for and passed on to future generations was a defense of
Hawaii's independence, not some sort of quasi-tribal pseudo-sovereignty of
federal recognition.
