Dole's birthday

In a commentary last week in the Advertiser, a letter in the Star-bulletin, and an identical letter in the Maui News, Ken Conklin tried to paint a rosy picture of Sanford Dole's role in Hawaii's history, for his 160th birthday, using a highly selective set of facts and distortions which is typical of Conklin.

In a Maui News letter today, entitled "Hawaii's only president deserves more descriptive title," Louis Vierra responds that "I'm sure Sanford Ballard Dole was all that Kenneth Conklin says he was (Letters, April 21). However, Mr. Dole's fan left out one title: treasonous overthrower of a legitimate sovereign nation and kingdom. I just wanted to be sure that is never forgotten."

I would point out that Dole wasn't even technically an "overthrower" because the events of 1893 weren't a legitimate overthrow, but a fake revolution supported through foreign intervention called for by Dole's gang.

Conklin seems to miss the hypocrisy that Dole's thugs called upon the U.S. to intervene under false pretenses in 1893, without which their attempt "would have failed for lack of popular support and insufficient arms." But then after a thorough and objective firsthand report by former Congressman James Blount was commissioned by President Cleveland, he concluded that so-called Provisional Government was "neither a government de facto nor de jure" and "owes its existence to an armed invasion by the United States" and called for the restoration of the legitimate Hawaiian government. Now that U.S intervention was inconvenient for them, the traitors rejected this plea based on nonintervention in the sovereign affairs of Hawaii! Conklin tries to argue that this proves they were not puppets, but what it actually proves is that these oligarchs were hypocrites motivated by power and greed, not some overriding principle.

Also, the "protest group" Dole led in 1887 forced upon King Kalakaua by threat of bodily harm a racist constitution modeled after the Jim Crow laws of the South that effectively disenfranchised the vast majority of Native Hawaiian voters.
