Treaty with Sweden & Norway - Neutrality recognized
On this day in 1852, Hawaii entered into a most favored nation
treaty
of friendship and commerce with the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway.
Significantly, this was I believe the first of several treaties in which
Hawaii's neutrality was explicitly
recognized:Article
XV. His Majesty the King of
Sweden and Norway engages to respect in time of war the
neutral
rights of the Hawaiian
Kingdom and to use his good offices with all other powers, having treaties with
His Majesty the King of the Hawaiian Islands, to induce them to adopt the same
policy towards the Hawaiian
Kingdom.Perhaps it is time to call
upon the good offices of Carl
XVI and Harald
V? (Now two separate kingdoms.)
