"Conquest of Hawaii" on History Channel
The Maui News editorial page today reviews
the History
Channel show
"Conquest of
Hawaii." I haven't seen the show myself, and
it doesn't appear to be scheduled
to show again, but you can order a
copy on videotape. The Maui News provides several examples of how the
history recounted is "selective" but it does say that the show noted that
"virtually every Hawaiian in the islands" signed petitions opposing annexation,
and that everyone, including the transient military, was allowed to vote for
statehood and that "perhaps they asked the wrong people to vote." These are both
important points that most folks are unaware of, and those in the sovereignty
movement have been trying to get out, so it is good for that information to
reach a larger audience.
