George Helm movie in the works
The Star-Bulletin reports
on plans to make a movie based on the life of George Helm, Jr., reknowned and
inspirational Hawaiian activist who catalyzed the occupation of Kaho`olawe and
stirred Hawaiians for sovereignty with his sweet
music and powerful oration.
It seems like it is being approached
in a sensitive way and it has the blessings of the family, so this could be a
very important film. The article says: "'The George Helm Jr. Story' will not be
a documentary or docudrama but a theatrical film with 'a story based on true
incidents... It will be true to the spirit ... but we'll also take some dramatic
license.'" George Helm is an extremely
important figure in Hawaiian history with a remarkable story that deserves to be
told. The article says the "production team and the Helms want the film to carry
'a universal message that leaves a legacy' like the recent New Zealand hit
'Whale Rider,' and Kevin Costner's 'Dances With Wolves,'" according to the
producer.The Advertiser also reports
on the movie plans and the Helm 'ohana's comments.
