Kamehameha sued; Palace repaired
Another
lawsuit has been filed against Kamehameha Schools alleging
discrimination in their admissions policy. Meanwhile, `Iolani Palace is getting
some much
needed repairs.
This latter item is good, because the palace was
the seat of the Hawaiian government, was the site of major historical events
surrounding the "overthrow" of that government, and continues to serve as a very
important symbol to Hawaiian nationals, as the center of the nation they believe
still exists, and as a site for many significant gatherings and events. The
article refers to it as "the only official royal palace in the U.S." which is
the usual tourist attraction line, only thing is it isn't actually in the U.S.,
but in territory illegally occupied by the U.S. Some of the docents at the
palace are pro-independence and manage to work in some real education as part of
the tours.
