Con-Con members support OHA
The
Star-Bulletin
reports
that "Several former leaders of the 1978 Hawaii Constitutional Convention
supported the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs yesterday in its fight against
legal challenges."And the
Advertiser
reports:
"The Office of Hawaiian Affairs yesterday called together a group of community
leaders who helped found OHA to defend the beleaguered agency one week before a
critical hearing in a federal lawsuit challenging its constitutionality. The
defenders all were associated with the 1978 Constitutional Convention that
approved the constitutional amendment establishing OHA. Delegates included
future Gov. John Waihee; Robinson Estate trustee William Paty, who chaired the
convention; and Frenchy DeSoto, who chaired the convention's standing committee
on Hawaiian affairs." Pacific
Business News also has an article
on this press conference. Irony of the day: "There was
unanimous support for
OHA at the Constitutional Convention,
including that of William
Burgess, the Honolulu attorney who was
instrumental in bringing what's known as the Arakaki lawsuit now challenging OHA
to federal court."
