SB: Racial bias probes should wait for Akaka bill
On the issue of the federal Department of
Education investigating whether a UH tuition waiver for Hawaiians violates
racial discrimination laws, the
Star-Bulletin
editorial
says that "While one hand of the Bush
administration is negotiating with Congress on changes to the Hawaiian
recognition bill, the other hand appears to be applying pressure on the state to
abandon programs the bill is intended to protect. Federal investigations into
allegations of racial discrimination favoring Hawaiians should be put on hold
while talks aimed at acknowledging Hawaiian autonomy continue."
Of course this just exposes the
motivations of Bush's ilk, in case they weren't already clear, and cast doubt
over any perception that they are negotiating in the best interest of Hawaiians.
Federal recognition will be not a protection, but a trap, and both it and the
lawsuits and probes are just further evidence of continued illegal
occupation.
