OHA responds to Arakaki

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs board responds to Arakaki plaintiffs in today's Advertiser. Of course these officers of the state, elected by the population as a whole, do not actually represent the voice of Native Hawaiians or Hawaiian nationals. They see wardship status through federal recognition of Native Hawaiians, and the preservation of the crumbs off the table programs (that pay their salaries), as just restitution for the invasion and occupation of a sovereign (and multi-racial) country. Don't get me wrong, I think they honestly believe what they do is in the best interest of Hawaiians, I just want to provide some context for their response.

I'm not sure what they're citing when they claim that "All surveys show that the vast majority of Native Hawaiians want to remain both proud Americans and proud Hawaiians..." I don't actually dispute that a majority don't yet support independence, but I don't know of any very recent polls, and I believe that OHA's own polling in the past showed that a solid plurality support independence, numbers that would surprise most who are unaware of the issue. During the 1999 federal "reconciliation" hearings the vast majority (like 90%) of those who came out on all islands testified in support of independence. If independence advocates had a fraction of the funds to educate the public, and dispel fears based on misinformation, that OHA has used to push for federal recognition, I'm sure the numbers would continue to grow.

But more to the point, what is legal and just is not only an issue only of popular opinion, after a century of occupation propaganda. Those who would choose to be American, while free to do so, also cannot deny the nationality of those who choose to remain Hawaiian nationals.

I do agree with the rest of that sentence, though, that the vast majority of Native Hawaiians "want to live in harmony with their fellow residents," regardless of whether they support federal recognition, independence, status quo, or whatever else.

And in the Star-Bulletin, a letter from Kamehameha Schools' about their efforts to fulfill the part of Princess Pauahi's will that calls for "support and education of orphans, and others in indigent circumstances, giving preference to Hawaiians of pure or part aboriginal blood."
