Ethnic scholarships and other KS issues
Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna writes
about the "dozens of scholarships for Hawai'i students of specific ethnic
backgrounds. Most of them were set up as a part of someone's estate after their
death." She asks: "How are these local funds different from the assets willed by
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to benefit the education of Native Hawaiian
children? In two big ways: One, nobody is trying to pull apart these people's
wills, and two, the princess had a lot more money. Could No. 2 be the reason for
No. 1?"In a Star-Bulletin article
the KS board defends its settlement of the admission policy lawsuit that
activists are unhappy with.Lisa De
Mello writes a letter
in the Advertiser saying, "I am saddened by this Hawaiian institution that has
betrayed its own people. After asking for our support to defend Princess Bernice
Pauahi Bishop's legacy, you turn your backs on us and settle out of court." Lucy
Akau writes a related letter
in the Star-Bulletin about KS and Hawaiian identity. Harlan Hughes writes a
letter
in the Maui News that KS should be helping all Hawaiians, not just a select few,
while Ron Zane's letter
calls KS and those who support its admissions policy racist.
