Operation Offset; Break-up of the union?
The
Advertiser
is finally reporting
today that the Republican's "Operation
Offset" (PDF) includes a proposal to eliminate federal Native Hawaiian
funding. I commented on it last
week, including the fact that the $40 million in annual programs amounts to a
grand total of $100 on average for each Native Hawaiian. The article quotes
Conklin saying the chance of the cuts actually happening are slim (wait until
Inouye retires?), but says he credits the attention being given to the Akaka
bill that such programs are now on the radar nationally. Yes, and thanks to
conservatives' response to it, so is Hawaii's
independence.
Like today's Washington Times editorial, for example, which actually tries to tone down the "secession" scare tactics a bit, but still has the lede that the bill is "portending the break-up of the union." I personally have more faith in the strength of the union than it appears conservatives do. I believe that the United States can come to terms with its illegal occupation of Hawaii, realizing it has never been a legitimate part of the union in the first place, without breaking up the union. Hawaii is, after all, a relatively small group of islands thousands of miles from "America," the only "state" with international waters in between, and with a geography and legal history quite distinct from any (other) state. But what the larger implications may or may not be in this regard should have no bearing either way on doing the right—and legal—thing in Hawaii's case.
