"State of OHA and the Hawaiian community" address
Yesterday was OHA's annual "state of OHA and the
Hawaiian community" address delivered by board chair Haunani Apoliona, in which
she called for Hawaiians to unify to protect Hawaiian programs and
assets—around "the Native Hawaiian Coalition, the registration of all
Native Hawaiians and passage of the Akaka bill." The

reports.Update:
Doug at Poinography also comments, and asks
about the Native Hawaiian Coalition, linking to this month's OHA newsletter
(PDF - see page 6) in which OHA administrator Clyde Namu'o discusses NHC as part
of "Plan B". I haven't really heard much lately about what they have been up to,
but here is a previous
post and article about a meeting they held on Kaua'i in July, and
here's an older
post about a March 2004 meeting, as summarized by Keoni Agard, at
which time OHA representatives agreed to "allow" the community to take control
of the process, and provide only funding, logistics, research and clerical
support. Anyone who has more current info about the NHC, feel free to share in
the comments.
