Kamehameha Schools trustee nominees forum

Star-Bulletin covers a forum last night with the three Kamehameha Schools trustee nominees, sponsored by Na Pua A Ke Ali'i Pauahi. All said they "would continue to appeal if a federal court strikes down the school's native Hawaiian admissions policy. However, each said they would also pursue alternatives to the policy to continue serving native Hawaiian children."
[Honolulu lawyer Allen K.] Hoe said the trustees should take a fresh look at the policy and "go outside the box to see what can be done to expand educational opportunities for Hawaiian children."

I have some ideas what that might mean, but it would have been interesting to hear Hoe share his ideas on this further.

My question about First Hawaiian Bank Senior Vice President Corbett Kalama is why he should be given the responsibility to help manage billions of dollars in Hawaiian assets when his bank in 2005 denied refinancing applications from native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders at a rate 4.5 times greater than applications from Caucasians and 3 times the denial rate for Asians. Asians in the lowest income bracket (less than 50% of median income) had lower denial rates than Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders in the highest income bracket (120% of median income). This is according to data released by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC). And remember, this is for refinancing, meaning that the applicants had already qualified for a loan and were just trying to get a lower interest rate. And the data for conventional loans were just as bad.

Here's some raw data for First Hawaiian Bank (excel spreadsheet):
