Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation Budget CutsFYI, Rec'd via

From: Mahealani Wendt Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2007 12:05 PM Subject: Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation Budget Cuts PLEASE SUPPORT LEGAL SERVICES FOR NATIVE HAWAIIANS We are writing to ask for your kokua. NHLC attorneys have served thousands of clients over the past 33 years, and some of its successes have angered powerful opponents. As a result, NHLC faces serious funding challenges at the legislature this year -- the Senate Committee on Water, Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs has agreed to cut NHLC's funding in half. The other half would be used to create a new project that would provide legal representation to Hawaiians who disagree with NHLC's clients. For example, some Hawaiians who support large development disagree with our clients who wish to protect burial sites. We agree that Hawaiians who disagree with our clients should have equal access to legal representation, but a 50% cut in NHLC's funding would have severe impacts on our ability to provide legal services. We believe additional funds should be appropriated for the new project, not taken from NHLC's budget. Please help us by phoning, faxing, e-mailing or writing AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to the following Committee Chair. Time is of the essence because this matter will most likely be considered again during the week of February 19. Your message can be short and simple: "Please don't cut OHA's legal services budget that goes to NHLC" Senator Rosalyn Baker, Chair Ways & Means Committee Phone: 586-6070 FAX: 586-6071 E-mail: senbaker@capitol.hawaii.gov Mail: State Capitol, Room 210 Honolulu, Hawai`i 96813 Rep.
