Justice Stevens re Rice v. Cayetano dissent
I'm a little slow on this one, but last week
Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was in Hawaii for a workshop, and among
other topics he discussed the Rice v. Cayetano decision, which struck down
Hawaiian-only voting in Office of Hawaiian Affairs elections, and for which he
wrote the dissenting opinion in the 7-2 decision. "Stevens acknowledged that his
years in Hawai'i helped shape his views in the dissent, which recognized
Hawai'i's unique history as a reason to uphold the law." From Friday, an
