Senate approves $64M for Native Hawaiian programs
The Pacific Business News reports
today that the "U.S. Senate passed a spending bill Wednesday night that has
$64.8 million for Native Hawaiian
programs, an increase over last year of $10.2
million." This is the type of funding that supporters of federal recognition say
they are trying to protect against legal attacks alleging racial bias. But it is
small compensation for the century-long occupation of a people's country,
annexed "without
consent or compensation," and a drop in the bucket compared to such
issues as back rent owed for use and abuse of huge areas of
land by the military.And the
Advertiser published a letter
today disputing Thurston Twigg-Smith's earlier distortion of historical
facts.
