BofA reneges on loan commitment to Hawaiians
Pu'uhonua "Bumpy" Kanahele, a longtime Hawaiian
activist, is asking for an investigation
into why Bank of America has failed to fulfill its federally mandated
commitment to provide $150 million in
lending to Native Hawaiians, and says small
grants given to non-profits involved in the issue were attempts to intimidate
them or buy them off and renege on its
commitments. The articles don't really make clear that the bank didn't
make this commitment voluntarily, but was required to make the loans as a
condition of its merger with Nation's Bank, based on previous discriminatory
lending practices against Hawaiian
communities.The Advertiser has some
pictures
from the opening ceremonies of the annual Aloha Festival, which although
cultural and social in nature today, still shows an example of the
royal
protocol which Hawaii carries and will be able
to apply in the diplomatic realm when the time comes.
