Military messes

Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna juxtaposes the Kaho'olawe and Waikane withdrawals with the military's other plans for expansion, and quotes a journal entry from George Helm:

"What is national defense when what is being destroyed is the very thing the military is entrusted to defend, the sacred land of (Hawai'i) America. The spirit of pride is left uncultivated, without truth and without meaning for the keiki o ka 'aina, cut off from the land as a fetus is cut off from his mother. National defense is indefensible in terms of the loss of pride for many of the citizens of Hawai'i-nei. Call me radical for I refuse to remain idle. I will not have the foreigner prostitute the soul of my being, and I will not make a whore out of my soul (my culture)."

The Advertiser reports that "A Marine Corps decision against using Waikane Valley for jungle training is cause for celebration in this rural Windward area, but it's also generating calls for the military to live up to its commitment to clear the land of unexploded ordnance. ... The Marines announced Wednesday that the past use of high explosive anti-tank rounds and bazooka rounds in the one-time military training area make it unsafe for troops to train there. The military has said that ridding the area of unexploded ordnance is too expensive, but plans to erect an $800,000 security fence around the property beginning in December to keep people out for safety reasons." The Star-Bulletin also covers the story.

Meanwhile, The Garden Island reports that an overflowing crowd of over 200 people gathered at Kalaheo School Thursday evening to see officials with the U.S. Navy and state Department of Land and Natural Resources "present a proposal by the Navy that they say would give them a say in the future use of agricultural land north of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, as well as plans to add more state land as a buffer to the base." "Two Hawaiian sovereignty activist objected to any usage of the land, reading letters from the Kingdom of Hawaii saying they claim the dominion over all 'national' lands."
