Waikane parcel may get military cleanup
The
Advertiser
reports
yesterday that "After decades of calling for a complete cleanup of military
ordnance in a longtime training area in Waikane Valley, residents may finally
get their wish. In a continuing effort to restore former U.S. Department of
Defense sites, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that about 874
acres of the Waikane Training Area is eligible for the Defense Environmental
Restoration Program in Formerly Used Defense
Sites."And the
Star-Bulletin
story
today says "A proposal to clear ordnance from
Waikane Valley is years late but better than nothing, several residents said
last night at an Army Corps of Engineers presentation. 'I thank God with all
that crap they got up there that nobody got killed,' said Henry Roberts, a
Waiahole resident who owns land in the valley. 'I think the government better
make up and do what's right. Clean it up.'"
