Kahoolawe transfer ceremony; Stryker EIS


The Advertiser has an article on today's ceremony for the transfer of control of Kaho'olawe from the Navy to the state, and the Star-Bulletin also has a story, which quotes Governor Lingle: "The bombing would be so intense, and it's so close to the south side of Maui, that dishes would fall off of the shelf. When the bombing stopped it was very noticeable to everyone and it was an historic day." I remember this from my high school days, when even upcountry in Makawao we could hear—or more like feel—the pounding of bombs falling on Kaho'olawe.

The Advertiser editorial talks about the future use of Kaho'olawe, and the long, slow process of restoration.

The Maui News talks about the procedure for dealing with ordnance yet to be found on the island.

Last week's Honolulu Weekly had a story about the Kaho'olawe transfer.

Preservation Online (he online magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation) has a story.

The Associated Press also had an article yesterday on the transfer of Kahoolawe, and other article on Monday. Numerous national publications picked up the AP article, including USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle.

In a Star-Bulletin letters section, Cory (Martha) Harden criticizes the Army's Stryker EIS, and the hearings process, and says "The EIS process has run so far off track that there are calls for the Army to redo the entire round of EIS hearings." And Eric Poohina criticizes military operations in Iraq and training in Hawaii, and calls on readers to "Brandish the banner of Hawaiian independence."

State Rep. Cynthia Thielen is proposing legislation to proactively protect Hawaii's military installations from civilian "encroachment" and prevent base closure. According to the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, defense spending totaled $3.47 billion in the islands in 2000. Evidence of the scale of the occupation...
