Suit filed over live-fire training in Makua

The Advertiser reports that "Wai'anae Coast activists have again sued the Army over a recent decision to allow Marines to conduct live-fire training next week in Makua Valley. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Malama Makua Monday evening in U.S. District Court, seeks to halt the use of mortars and shoulder-fired rockets because of the risk of fire in the valley, home to 45 endangered plants and animals and 100 archaeological features. The Marines plan to begin training next Monday."

And the Star-Bulletin reports: "A Waianae citizens group and the military are squaring off in court again over the use of Makua Valley -- a site the group says is in need of protection, but which the Marine Corps says is crucial to training. About 100 Kaneohe Marines are scheduled for live-fire training in the valley next week, prompting Malama Makua to file a lawsuit Monday to halt the exercises, alleging they violate a federal court settlement. A hearing is scheduled for tomorrow."

Here's the Earth Justice press release on the lawsuit.

And in her regular Star-Bulletin column Under the Sun, Cynthia Oi says the military in the isles behaves like an unwanted guest: "It may be time now for Hawaii to say no. No to further destruction of our land, no to unexploded bombs and pollution from chemicals they contain, no to damage of remaining habitats for rare and endangered birds and plant life, no to the arbitrary military disposition to run over forests, plains and hills then abandon them when they are made unsafe for more drills... If the military wants to wreak havoc on Hawaiian soil, it should first have the money and a realistic plan to clean up the mess before it takes its tanks and goes elsewhere. Otherwise, it can keep the so-called economic benefits it says its presence metes out. We'll pass on the deal."
