Living in a fairy tale

Thomas E. Stuart has an incredibly mean-spirited, reactionary and revisionist letter in the Advertiser, again trying to minimize the U.S. role in the 'overthrow' in the context of the Navy UARC debate at UH. It was all the queen's fault, you know.

We've been around this over and over in recent discussions, and I won't cite the overwhelming evidence again. One can debate the implications of the U.S. role in the fake revolution of 1893, and what place if any that should have in the UARC issue today.

But to me, the question of whether the U.S. was not only involved but ultimately responsible, and whether it would not have occurred without U.S. involvement, cannot be seriously challenged. It is a matter of historical fact, supported by numerous primary source documents, admitted to at the time by the U.S. government after exhaustive investigation, against their own interest, and again 100 years later, again against their interest.

But I tell you, the more we have these folks popping up and trying to revise history to somehow justify or cover over the illegal and immoral actions, the more we know that the education about the truth of history has been effective. Our success is demonstrated by their desperation.

Update 11/28: Guy Belegaud responds that Stuart's revisionist letter is "arrogant and ignorant" and suggest that "It should be required that any newcomer moving to the Islands pass a history test, to be aware of the historical facts. Vietnam veteran Stuart would have failed and would still be on the Mainland."

Update 12/1: Gary K. Nihipali says: "His narrow-minded, delusional remarks only strengthen our resolve to persevere toward sovereignty."
