When America begins to crumble?

Also on the same Ka Leo letters page, Hina Makanani has a letter about the UARC and Hawaii's role in military expansion that I'm sure will raise some ire in various parts. It includes this graf:
When America begins to crumble as a united country, it will begin in Hawai'i, with the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. If Hawai'i gains its independence from the U.S., then the greatest nation in the world will begin to crumble. The military sees this as America's greatest national security risk and so the Bush administration has beefed up Hawaii's military to unprecedented levels in hopes of scaring the Native people from trying to reclaim their stolen homelands from the United States.

Hmm, I'm not so sure how much the military build-up in Hawaii has directly to do with the sovereignty 'movement,' and I truly hope that the United States is strong enough to peacefully end the occupation of Hawaii without crumbling. I also believe sadly that the policies and actions of the U.S. over the last five years have dramatically weakened the country in ways that are not yet seen, and that if and when it does begin to crumble it will have to do with forces far beyond Hawaii.

Makanani concludes with this:
The Hawaiian people must embrace their culture and denounce the American way of life by not being reliant on McDonald's and Wal-Mart and begin to live a self sustained lifestyle off the grid of expected society. Only when we stop relying on the United States will we, the Hawaiian people, gain our independence from the United States just as the Native Americans have done.

Huh? Cultivating self-reliance (energy, food, etc.) in the islands is important from any perspective. But Native Americans aren't independent, politically or generally in any other real meaningful sense.
