In Memoriam: What Memorial Day means for many Hawaiians today
The Pacifica Network's news program, Free Speech
Radio News, is airing a thirty-minute documentary on Memorial Day produced by
Anne Keala Kelly called "In Memoriam." It includes interviews with Noenoe Silva,
Mel Kalahiki, Vicky Holt-Takamine, Wayne Kahoonei Panoke, Ty Kawika Tengan,
Helene Malulani Kelly, Mikahala Roy, Keanu Sai and Kaleikoa Kaeo. It also
includes music performed by our friend, Didi Lee Kwai, that Keala recorded a
year or so before she died.Although it
will be a national US broadcast, none of the Hawai`i radio stations carry FSRN.
So, if you don't live in an area that airs that show, you will need to download
(MP3) it from their site, www.fsrn.org -- it's on the home page
where it says "Click Here For Monday's Memorial Day Special Documentary." It's
already available there and will be permanently archived
there.Keala says: "Memorial Day is a
national American holiday set aside for memorializing those who have died in
American wars. In Memoriam is about Hawaiian people, how we feel about our
kupuna who have passed on, and some of the ways Hawaiians, as a people, have
sacrificed for America."
