am - Press conferenceThe Army has
threatened to resume its Stryker brigade expansion and destruction of sacred
sites in Lihu'e, Central O'ahu on November 1 despite a federal court ruling that
the Army failed to do an adequate environmental impact study for the Stryker
expansion, in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act
(NEPA).Army expansion plans threaten
Hale'au'au heiau, the agricultural complex Kukuiolono, and more than 200
recently discovered cultural, religious and possible burial sites. Depleted
uranium, chemical weapons, unexploded ordnance and decades of military abuse
have contaminated the sacred central Oahu plains, home to our chiefs,
threatening the health of our communities from Wahiawa to Wai'anae and
Waialua. The sacred 'aina of Lihu'e
is being held hostage by the Army. Let's stand together to protect our
community, our 'aina and our sacred cultural sites from military expansion. We
demand that the Army: 1. Immediately halt all Stryker related expansion and
construction plans; 2. Allow cultural access to sacred sites in Lihu'e; and 3.
Disclose all information about toxic and hazardous materials found in the
Stryker project areas including chemical weapons and depleted uranium and the
dangers that it poses to public health and the
environment. Come stand together to
protect the aina, protect the people, and stop
