Military base closure recommendations - Hawaii "virtually untouched"
As the
Advertiser
reports,
in a Pentagon recommendation announced today to close and realign military bases
around the country, none of the Hawai`i's major military bases was recommended
for closure, although the Army National Guard Reserve Center at Honokaa would
close with a loss of 118 military positions, and another 180 military jobs would
be lost under force changes at the Pearl Harbor shipyard and Hickam Air Force
Base. This AP article

Star-Bulletin
also has more background relevant to Hawaii in
this article,
although it came out before the details of the list were announced. Their brief
breaking news article
says "Hawaii’s 83 major military installations were left virtually
untouched by today’s base closure recommendations by the
Pentagon."
Meanwhile, the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee panel yesterday gave preliminary approval of $221 million in military construction money for Hawai'i, most of which would go toward transforming a 25th Infantry Division brigade into a Stryker unit and revamping Schofield Barracks, as part of the annual defense authorization bill now being put together in the House.
And Tony Castanha has a letter in the Advertiser about the flawed consultation process that led to the anti-UARC sit-in at UH, plus the Star-Bulletin has a couple letters criticizing both the protesters and McClain for accepting most of their demands.
