Princess Ruth Ke‘elikolani biography on PBS Hawaii
PBS Hawai`i will premier half-hour documentary
programs (both English and the Hawaiian Language versions) on the life of
Princess Ruth Ke‘elikolani on Wednesday, June 9, and Saturday June 12,
starting at 8:00 p.m.From the PBS
Hawaii program
note: "A formidable presence
in 19th-century Hawai‘i, Princess Ruth Ke‘elikolani refused to speak
English, convert to Christianity, or leave the Hawaiian Islands. Though her life
was darkened by the deaths of her children and her beloved first husband, she
was a popular and strong force who resisted the kingdom’s drift toward
annexation... Ruth Ke‘elikolani is a fascinating story of how one member
of Hawaiian royalty opposed – and often very successfully – the
forces of cultural and economic imperialism."
